GS Inima, together with the Mancomunidad de La Sagra, held yesterday the laying of the Foundation Stone ceremony to mark the start of the expansion and modernization of the Illescas-Yuncos-Numancia de la Sagra Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), which will increase its treatment capacity from 7.440 m³/day to 15.000 m³/day. This ceremony kicks off the construction work for the WWTP expansion, beginning with Phase I of the project. This phase includes the renovation of the biological reactor, replacement of diffusers, new perimeter fencing, and installation of a 500 kW photovoltaic system.
With an investment exceeding 5 million euros, the ambitious project focuses on expanding the treatment plant’s capacity and modernizing the water infrastructure by integrating advanced technologies to optimize energy consumption and reduce environmental impact. These advancements will enable more efficient and sustainable water treatment, benefiting both the community and the natural environment.
The ceremony was attended by Julián Torrejón, President of the Mancomunidad de La Sagra, representatives from the 16 municipalities that comprise the association, and Francisco de los Santos, Water Management Manager at GS Inima, among other officials.
During the event, guests toured the facilities and learned in detail about the scope of the project. The ceremony included the display of a representative piece, which will remain on the WWTP premises. As a symbolic gesture, Julián Torrejón also buried a time capsule, representing a long-term commitment to the environment and future generations.
“The expansion of this project will ensure the treatment capacity for current and future urban and industrial sectors that require a system capable of returning treated water to the natural environment, meeting discharge quality standards and supporting the sustainable development of our region.”
“The expansion of the Illescas-Yuncos-Numancia de la Sagra WWTP will set a regional benchmark in circular economy practices by utilizing the produced sludge to generate biogas and serve as agricultural fertilizer. It will incorporate the most advanced technologies to optimize energy consumption and significantly reduce the carbon footprint, thereby promoting a more sustainable resource management and minimizing environmental impact.”
“This project represents a strong commitment of the Mancomunidad for the sustainable development of the region, in collaboration with GS Inima, whose dedication and effort make it possible to equip the area with adequate infrastructures. This ensures wastewater treatment while reducing energy costs through power generation from a photovoltaic plant that will be attached to this treatment facility, as well as potential future energy production from sludge digestion.”
These advancements reflect the commitment of GS Inima and the Mancomunidad de La Sagra to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy). Furthermore, this initiative will strengthen responsible water management and emission reductions, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient environment for the community.
