In the framework of the World Water Day, representatives of GS Inima, accompanied by the president of the Mancomunidad Sagra Alta, María José Ruiz, the mayor of Yuncos, the deputy mayor of Illescas and the mayor of Illescas and the mayor of Numancia de la Sagra, presented yesterday the Project for the Expansion of Wastewater Treatment Plant Illescas-Numancia de la Sagra – Yuncos. The event took place in the current WWTP and was attended by mayors and representatives of the 14 municipalities which make up the Mancomunidad de la Sagra Alta.
The project presented represents an efficient management model for the purification of the municipalities of the Mancomunidad, not only because of its not only because of the increase in treatment capacity, from the current 7.440m³/day to 3m³/day, which could be increased to 15.000m³ /day, thus responding to the demographic and economic growth of the regionbut also because it incorporates the latest technological advances aimed at minimizing energy consumption and sludge reduction.
“The expansion of the Illescas, Numancia and Yuncos wastewater treatment plant will be a regional benchmark regarding the circular economy, taking advantage of and transforming biogas into energy, which further reduces the environmental impact of the plant. I am sure that its operation will be a source of pride for our Commonwealth and an example to follow for other similar facilities”, Maria José Ruiz, president of the Sagra Alta Commonwealth.
The facility will include an anaerobic digestion system that will reduce treatment sludge and, at the same time, produce biogas as a by-product. It is also contemplated to include the primary decantation with two 19,00m decanters to reduce solids and contaminants with a minimal energy expenditure.
In fact, the plant also includes in its design the installation of solar panels with an installed power of 500 Kwp, which makes it a highly sustainable and ecological facility.
“We are facing a unique project in the region. There is no plant in the region that treats these flows and that has an anaerobic digestion of sludge and that at the same time produces biogas to be used in electricity generation. It is designed for the future, with infinite possibilities such as the production of reclaimed water for irrigation and flushing in the nearest municipalities. The biogas can also be purified and concentrated to supply fuel to commonwealth vehicles,” he stressed.
Current Illescas-Numancia de la Sagra – Yuncos Water Treatment Plant
Built in 1999 and operated by GS Inima since then, the current WWTP collects and treats wastewater from the municipalities of Numancia de la Sagra, Yuncos and part of Illescas. The plant was designed to receive a flow of 7.440m3/day and has the following treatment phases: pretreatment, biological treatment, secondary settling and sludge dehydration.
The expansion project, in addition to doubling its treatment capacity, will include new phases such as primary settling, anaerobic digestion, photovoltaic self-consumption, and electrical self-consumption by biogas.
“The expansion of the Illescas, Numancia and Yuncos wastewater treatment plant will be a regional benchmark regarding the circular economy, taking advantage of and transforming biogas into energy, which further reduces the environmental impact of the plant. I am sure that its operation will be a source of pride for our Commonwealth and an example to follow for other similar facilities”
