In recent years, concern has grown about microplastics (PM) as emerging pollutants with a significant impact on the environment.
PM includes all plastic particles smaller than 5 mm, including a wide range of small particles that can be easily ingested by living organisms. This implies the possible occurrence of multiple unwanted effects in aquatic life, including digestive problems, reduced growth, metabolic damage or abnormal behavior. Likewise, microplastics are introduced and accumulate in aquatic trophic chains, both marine and freshwater, causing toxicity and being able to reach the human food chain.
